Zahlen: als Ziffern oder als Wort?
Im Lektorat beschäftige ich mich – klar! – mit Sprache, also mit Wörtern und Buchstaben. Aber wie steht es mit der Schreibung von Zahlen? Auch das gehört zur Stimmigkeit eines Textes.
Soll man Zahlen in Ziffern oder in Buchstaben schreiben?
Viele werden beim Schreiben eine alte Buchdruckerregel im Kopf haben, die besagt, dass die Zahlen von 1 bis 12 in Buchstaben und die Zahlen ab 13 in Ziffern zu schreiben seien. Diese Regel gilt nicht mehr. Aber es gilt genauer hinzugucken.
Was soll ausgedrückt werden?
Ist die Zahl an sich bzw. ihr Wert von großer Bedeutung, wie es oft in Sportartikeln, Statistiken, Studien oder wissenschaftlichen Texten der Fall ist, dann werden die Zahlen, auch die von 1 bis 12, meistens als Ziffern schrieben.
Spikes dürfen im Vorfußbereich maximal 6 Dornen haben, Hochsprung- und Speerwurfspikes zusätzlich bis zu 4 Dornen im Absatz.

In welchem Zusammenhang stehen die Zahlen?
Es dient der Lesbarkeit, im selben Absatz auch kleine Zahlen auszuschreiben, wenn eine größere Zahl in Ziffern dort steht oder eine Dezimalzahl (also eine Zahl mit Komma).
Sie sprang deutlich über 4 m, nämlich 4,12 m.

Kombination mit (Maß-)Einheiten
Man schreibt die Zahl in Ziffern, wenn sie vor mit einer Maßeinheit steht, also ein Gewicht, eine Entfernung oder Zeitspanne angibt:

12 Sek. / 12 s
Gleiches gilt für die Schreibung vor Währungszeichen oder anderen Zeichen wie Prozent:

Wird die Einheit bzw. das Zeichen ausgeschrieben, darf man sich aussuchen, ob man die Zahl in Ziffern schreibt oder das Wort ausschreibt:
10 Kilometer / zehn Kilometer, 3 Millimeter / drei Millimeter
5 Kilogramm / 5 Kilogramm, 80 Gramm / achtzig Gramm
30 Sekunden / dreißig Sekunden
3 Euro, drei Euro

Bei Rang- und der Reihenfolgen gilt werden Ordnungszahlen generell großgeschrieben:

Steht ein Bezugswort dabei, so werden Ordinalzahlen kleingeschrieben (attributiver Gebrauch):

Wenn Ordinalzahlen als Ziffern geschrieben werden, erhalten sie einen Punkt: 1., 2., 3.
